Will This Deep-Learning Expert Take Tesla's Autopilot to the Next Level?

Well, that was quick. On Tuesday, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) said its head of Autopilot software is leaving the company, just six months after he joined the electric-car maker. The departure from Tesla's Autopilot team is the second of two key losses from the important unit in the past seven months.
But Tesla's new hire for the Autopilot team doesn't disappoint. Here's a look at Tesla's recent departures and hires for the vital segment, as well why Autopilot's ongoing development is so critical for Tesla.

Comings and goings In January, Tesla's hiring of Apple 's Chris Lattner was considered a major win . At Apple, the executive was responsible for creating the tech giant's new programming language, called Swift. At Tesla, he took on the role of vice president of Autopilot. “We are very excited that Chris is joining Tesla to lead our Autopilot engineering team and accelerate the future of autonomous driving,” Tesla said in a..

Activision Blizzard at E3 2017: What Investors Need to Know

Activision Blizzard at E3 2017: What Investors Need to Know

Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI) didn't have a huge presence at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), opting not to put on its own press conference or announce any new games. However, the company did showcase and demo some upcoming titles that have near- and long-term significance, and there were promising signs for shareholders.

Call of Duty returns its roots Last year's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare saw the series drift to futuristic landscapes and spaceship combat, and while the title was generally well received by critics, its sales were a significant disappointment compared with other recent entries in the series. In contrast, this year's installment of Activision's long-running and massively popular first-person-shooter franchise will return to the World War II backdrop that the games started with, and the company brought new footage and gameplay demos to this year's E3 that point toward a high-qualit..

Spotify's Widening Losses Point to a Painful IPO

Spotify's Widening Losses Point to a Painful IPO

As predicted as much as a year ago, music-streaming leader Spotify's eventual IPO was only a matter of time. More to the point, the comically onerous terms of its most recent round of financing give Spotify a strong incentive to go public as quickly as possible.
So it should come as no surprise that multiple reports over the past several months have claimed that Spotify's IPO could be only months away, though the company may choose an unconventional way of listing its shares.
But based on info from a recent leak of Spotify's 2016 financial data, the company seems to be sitting in a sea of red. What do the numbers say about the long-term prospects of the company's business model?
Spotify: Still seeing red Last week, the music industry site Music Business Worldwide published Spotify's updated financial statements for 2016 . As with past reports, the financial statements included a number of interesting takeaways.

Apple, Inc. as a Dividend Stock: Still a Top Pick

Apple, Inc. as a Dividend Stock: Still a Top Pick

With a dividend yield of just 1.7%, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) certainly doesn't look like a screaming buy for investors looking for income. But a closer look reveals there are several good reasons dividend investors should bet on Apple as a dividend stock, despite its unimpressive dividend yield. Indeed, in a rosy market, when reasonable valuations are hard to come by, Apple could very well be one of the best dividend stocks on the market.
Here are three reasons Apple is a top dividend stock.

Apple is a free cash flow monster Apple's dividend is as safe as they come. Not only is it backed by a massive $256.8 billion cash position when adding in Apple's marketable securities, but the tech giant is raking in boatloads of free cash flow every year. In the trailing 12 months, for instance, Apple's free cash flow (operating cash less capital expenditures) was about $53 billion.
Apple's free cash flow is well beyond what the tech giant needs to su..

Better Buy: Sierra Wireless, Inc. vs. NVIDIA

Tech stock investors today are presented with a staggering array of options to try and beat the market. And for those participating in the right industries, many tech leaders have proven that size doesn't matter when it comes to generating outsized growth and returns.
To illustrate that point, let's take a closer look at two promising tech stocks sitting at very different points in their respective growth stories: GPU chip specialist NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) , and Internet of Things (IoT) pure play Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) .

How NVIDIA is powering the AI revolution First up, NVIDIA has delivered stunning returns for investors of late, with shares skyrocketing 241% over the past year. As of this writing, that brings NVIDIA's market capitalization to a staggering $94.75 billion.

Intel Tries to One-Up AMD in the CPU Battle

The battle for the high-end PC market is heating up. In mid-May, Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) announced its most powerful central processing unit (CPU) for the consumer market, called the Threadripper. But CPU market leader Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) decided to fight fire with fire, launching an even more powerful consumer-focused CPU just two weeks later.
Why is Intel trying to match AMD step-for-step despite owning the lion's share of the CPU market?
Intel is feeling the heat Intel has tightened its grip on the CPU market over the past decade, currently estimated to hold an almost 80% share. But the chip giant has started feeling the heat from AMD's latest Ryzen CPU lineup, which PassMark, according to tweaktown.com , estimates gained 2% market share during the first quarter of 2017.

Better Buy: Corning Incorporated vs. Universal Display

In today's fast-changing world of technology, investors need to find strong businesses that with the ability to survive and thrive. Better yet, those businesses should be able to shape the industries in which they participate.
I think both Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) and Universal Display (NASDAQ: OLED) have proved they fit this bill. So let's look at what makes these two technology leaders stand out, and — perhaps most interesting — which is the better buy for investors right now.

Why Corning's strength is clear Corning is a 166-year-old glass technology specialist with a market capitalization of just over $27 billion as of this writing. Corning makes most of its money in its core display technologies segment, primarily through selling specialized glass substrates for liquid crystal displays in televisions, smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and computer monitors. Growth is modest in this segment, however, with display technologies' co..

Citigroup Shouldn’t Have Any Problem Passing This Year’s Stress Tests

Citigroup (NYSE: C) has had its fair share of issues with the annual stress tests in the past. But there's little reason to think it won't sail through this year's tests, from which the Federal Reserve will release the first round of results on Thursday.
It all boils down to capital, and specifically the common equity tier 1 capital ratio. The CET1 ratio reflects how much high-quality capital a bank has relative to a risk-weighted measure of its assets.

The purpose of the stress tests, which the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 mandate, is to assess whether banks with more than $50 billion in assets on their balance sheets have enough capital to survive and continue lending through an economic downturn akin to the financial crisis .
In this year's tests, which the Fed administers, it's assumed that the unemployment rate spikes to 10%, gross domestic product contracts by 6.5%, stock prices lo..

2 Incredibly Cheap Driverless Car Stocks

2 Incredibly Cheap Driverless Car Stocks

The driverless car industry is only in its beginning stages — exactly zero car companies currently sell fully autonomous cars — but it's shaping up to be a $77 billion business by 2035, according to Boston Consulting Group.
Much of the attention and rumors surrounding autonomous vehicles goes to tech players like Alphabet , Tesla , NVIDIA , and even Apple . And while many of them deserve the attention they're getting, some of these stocks are seeing their valuations skyrocket. For example, NVIDIA currently trades at 45 times its forward earnings.
But investors looking for solid driverless-car plays don't have to look to Silicon Valley, and they don't have to pay a premium, either. That's because Ford (NYSE: F) and General Motors (NYSE: GM) are taking the lead in driverless cars — and their share prices look downright cheap right now.

Qualcomm, Inc.: The Bear Case from a Bull

Qualcomm, Inc.: The Bear Case from a Bull

If its stock price were based solely on its quarterly results, Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) shares would be flying high this year. Alas, there's a great deal more to this chipmaker's story than its financials, which is why the bears are ruling the day.
Unlike those of many of its semiconductor industry peers, Qualcomm's shares are down significantly in 2017 — nearly 12% so far — and considering the potentially concerning developments still unfolding, that bearish sentiment isn't over. Investors who follow the tech industry have likely heard at least some of the legal news coming from the Qualcomm camp.

MSCI Gives Green Light To China A-Shares On Fourth Try

Shutterstock photo

[ibd-display-video id=968175 top=true]Turns out, the fourth time was the charm. Index provider MSCI on Tuesday decided to include mainland China stocks, or A-shares, in its global emerging-market benchmark index.
Wall Street had been watching with interest for the decision, since dozens of funds – including $32 billion iShares Emerging Markets ( EEM ) – track or are benchmarked to MSCI Emerging Markets Index. That means fund managers in the U.S. and abroad will likely invest billions into Chinese equities traded in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
The move would also raise the Middle Kingdom's profile in global capital markets. This was China's fourth attempt at being included in the MSCI index. MSCI rejected the first three tries due to “accessibility” issues for foreign investors in China's stock markets, though MSCI rival indexing giant FTSE decided to include A-shares in its EM indexes in 2015.
MSCI Emerging Markets already includes Hong Kong shares. Wi..

Better Buy: Delta Air Lines, Inc. vs. Hawaiian Holdings

Airlines have grown fast and furious in recent years. Stronger economic conditions, cheaper fuel, and industry merger and acquisition activity have all helped boost prospects for surviving airlines, and while airline giant Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) has aimed to grab up a huge chunk of the global market, Hawaiian Holdings (NASDAQ: HA) has concentrated on the appeal of a particularly attractive tourist destination. Given how airlines have performed recently, investors are curious which of the two is more likely to thrive going forward. Let's compare Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Holdings on several key metrics to see which looks more attractive currently.
Valuation and stock performance Delta and Hawaiian have both been good to shareholders over the past year. Delta has climbed a little bit further, posting a 38% rise since June 2016, compared to Hawaiian's only slightly less impressive 31% gain.
From a valuation perspective, both airlines trade at what appear to be very low..

At 250 Million Daily Active Users, Instagram Stories Continues to Crush Snapchat

In case it wasn't clear by now, Facebook 's (NASDAQ: FB) Instagram is crushing Snap 's (NYSE: SNAP) Snapchat. It was plain to see in April, when Instagram Stories hit 200 million daily active users (DAUs), surpassing Snapchat's DAU base just a few months after launching. At that time, Snap had yet to report its first public earnings release, and the most current figure at that point was that Snapchat closed out 2016 with 158 million DAUs.
Shortly thereafter, Snap reported first-quarter results and disclosed that it added 8 million DAUs in the first quarter, bringing its total DAU base to 166 million. Unfortunately for Snapchat, Instagram Stories just hit 250 million DAUs.

A Short-Term Dip Is a Great Time to Consider Buying These Long-Term Stocks

Bulls continue to bellow on Wall Street, with the stock market keeping up its winning ways. Sooner or later, though, stocks will inevitably take a breather.
We asked three Motley Fool contributors which stocks they would recommend investors consider when the market pulls back a bit. Here's why they selected Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ: BBBY) , EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG) , and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) as great long-term stocks to buy in a short-term dip.

Betting against the retail apocalypse Tim Green (Bed Bath & Beyond): Shares of Bed Bath & Beyond have been in decline for about two-and-a-half years. The stock is down more than 50% since the beginning of 2015, with investors rightfully concerned about the retailer's ability to compete in the age of e-commerce. Bed Bath & Beyond's gross and operating margins have been slumping for years, and net income has dropped 34% since fiscal 2013.
Despite the steep drop in earnings, Bed Bath & Beyon..

Why Sears Holdings Corp. Stock Popped Today

What happened Shares of Sears Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD) surged today on what appeared to be a short squeeze, as there was no direct news out on the company. The stock was up as much as 11% during today's session and finished with a 6.8% gain.

So what Sears shares remain volatile as speculation about its future continues to swirl on Wall Street. While many believe the company is headed to bankruptcy, CEO Eddie Lampert and others have taken up a vigorous defense of the ailing retailer, which also owns Kmart. Board member and major shareholder Bruce Berkowitz said the Amazon.com-Whole Foods deal showed the value of physical retail and companies such as Sears, which remains one of the biggest retailers by square footage despite closing hundreds of stores.
More than three-quarters (76.4%) of the company's shares outstanding are now sold short, meaning more that many investors are betting on the stock to fall. Yesterday was the stock's lowes..

3 Stocks That Win on Uber's Implosion

It's barely summer and already Uber has had one of the worst years in memory for a high-profile company.
It started in January when the ride-hailing service was accused of breaking a strike by New York taxi drivers protesting the Trump travel ban at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Uber suspended its surge pricing for travel to and from JFK, and though it maintains the move was not an attempt to break the strike or support the travel ban, a #DeleteUber campaign ensued on social media with as many as half a million people deleting their accounts with the ride-hailing service.
Though Uber may have been unfairly punished in that instance, the situation was evidence of how much a company's reputation matters in today's politically heated environment. Uber had already gained notoriety for its cutthroat competitiveness and abusive corporate behavior, so the accusation that it was engaging in strike breaking seemed entirely believable to the many customers who chose to ..

When Will Uber IPO?

When Will Uber IPO?

When will Uber Technologies go public?
That has been one of the hottest questions in Silicon Valley for a few years now. With a reported valuation of nearly $70 billion in its last fund-raising round, the ride-hailing giant is by far the richest of the Valley's not-yet-public “unicorn” technology companies.
Uber's recent string of company-shaking scandals seems to have put any plans for an initial public offering (IPO) on the back burner, to say the least. But still: At some point, Uber's early investors will want a chance to cash out. When will that happen?

Are Movie Theater Stocks a Buy?

Are Movie Theater Stocks a Buy?

The busy summer movie season is under way, and the stocks of the country's three biggest theater chains — AMC Entertainment (NYSE: AMC) , Regal Entertainment (NYSE: RGC) , and Cinemark Holdings (NYSE: CNK) — kicked it off in a disappointing way. The culprit? Slowing growth expectations and a so far lackluster performance at the box office.
A tough act to follow There has been no shortage of potential blockbuster releases so far this year. However, until the early June release of Warner Brother 's Wonder Woman , ticket sales were disappointing thanks to a few box office bombs. After some female heroics on- and off-screen — Wonder Woman has shattered records for a movie directed by a woman with a better-than-$100-million opening weekend — total ticket sales are now up slightly year to date and flat for the summer movie season. Prior to the Princess of the Amazons hitting the big screen, ticket sales were off some 10% compared to last summer at this time.
To be fair, 2016 ..

Exelixis, Inc. EXEL announced results from an analysis of the data from the phase II trial, CABOSUN. The study compared Cabometyx to Pfizer's PFE Sutent in the first-line treatment of intermediate- or poor-risk advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients.
We note that Cabometyx tablets were approved for previously treated advanced kidney cancer in the U.S. in Apr 2016. Cabometyx was also approved in EU in Sep 2016 for the treatment of advanced RCC in adults who have received prior vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-targeted therapy.
An independent radiology review committee has confirmed the primary efficacy endpoint results of investigator-assessed progression-free survival (PFS) in the CABOSUN trial.
The randomized, open-label, active-controlled phase II trial enrolled 157 patients with advanced RCC. Patients were randomized 1:1 to receive Cabometyx (60 mg once daily) or Sutent (50 mg once daily, four weeks on followed by two weeks off). The trial..

Philip Morris to Build $320M Smoke-Free Product Facility

Philip Morris International Inc. PM intends to invest roughly $320 million for building a Smoke-Free Product facility in Dresden, Germany. The construction is planned to start in late 2017 and will be wholly operational early 2019 onwards. The factory is likely to create jobs for nearly 500 workers and will manufacture HEETS, the tobacco units for the electronic tobacco heating device IQOS (Heatsticks that heat tobacco instead of burning it).

In fact, this plan will add Germany to the growing list of countries that also includes Italy and Switzerland, where Philip Morris produces tobacco units for IQOS. Further, IQOS has been successful in other European countries as well. The new facility in Germany is expected to further expand the company's reach. Moving forward, the company plans to convert the cigarette manufacturing factory of its affiliate in Greece to IQOS tobacco unit. Mainland China Stocks In Reach As MSCI Greenlights A-Shares

Wi..

Better Buy: Sierra Wireless vs. Micron Technology

Investors in Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) have enjoyed a 90% gain so far this year. Daily FX Market Roundup 06.20.17
It was a lively session in the foreign exchange market despite the lack of market moving data as the moves in FX were led by the losses in the British pound. Sterling crashed hard on the back of Bank of England Governor Mark Carney's comments this morning and extended its slide throughout the North American trading session. GBP/USD dropped as low as 1.26 while EUR/GBP hit a high of 0.8835. Unlike the 3 members of the monetary policy committee who voted for an immediate rate hike, Carney feels that it would take several months to see if wages and in turn consumption recovers. He remains concerned about the consequences of Brexit and while he didn't say exactly, political uncertainty also encourages his cautiousness. So while 3 members of the central bank want an immediate hike, the BoE's leadership does not support tightening making a 2017 hike unlikely. 10 year Gilt yields fell sharply in response, driving GBP/USD dow..

3 Stocks That Could Make You Rich

3 Stocks That Could Make You Rich

For nearly a decade now, ever since the dark days of the Great Recession, I've taken a value-investing approach to investing in the stock market.
Back then, in the deep, dark hole that was 2009, some of the world's best companies were selling for a song, and value investing was easy. In today's overheated market, with the S&P 500 up more than threefold off its February 2009 lows, value investing isn't so easy anymore.
But it can still make you rich.

Investing in semiconductor stocks can make you rich — if you buy them cheaply enough. Image source: Getty Images.
Three simple rules The secret to getting rich from the stock market, I've found, consists of knowing three simple rules, and sticking to those rules no matter how expensive the stock market gets.
Rule No. 1 is to invest only in companies generating strong free cash flow . No matter how much profit a company's income statement says it's making, if it's not generating cash, it's t..

3 Stocks with Huge Competitive Advantages

3 Stocks with Huge Competitive Advantages

“The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how much it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and, above all, the durability of that advantage.” — Warren Buffett.
When one of the best investors on the planet speaks about successful investing, we'd all be wise to listen. Below, three of our analysts explain why they believe the durable and powerful competitive advantages of Cerner (NASDAQ: CERN) , Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG) , and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) could pay off for investors.
When switching costs matter Daniel Miller (Cerner) : For those of you unaware of Cerner, it's a leading healthcare information technology supplier (HCIT) that helps clients improve their operations and efficiency with a slew of software, hardware and other services. But the key factor supporting Cerner's top and bottom line performance is the high switching costs its customers face.
